Washington Jan. 8, 1862

My dear Sir,

I recd yr letter this Mon'y with ,150 on Irving Bk. which makes with the ,100 already recd ,250 - the full amt. appropriated by the Board. Whilst I thank you for yr prompt attention, I cannot help thinking that the money has produced good fruit. As you will perceive from the enclosed bill, the Committee have adopted my amendment. On Monday a protest was published in the Washington papers signed by Wise, Einhorn Adler etc. stating that the Board of Delegates do not represent any congregations, that they are a self constituted body etc. etc. A member of the Military Committee told me, that it made no impression on them, that it excited ridicule rather than otherwise and that they had resolved to adopt my suggestion. Those reformed Rabbis seem to have no other object than to injure the cause of Judaism both socially & religiously. I think the best course would be not to take any notice of that protest in the Messenger. I sent on Monday a letter to the Messenger. I have not yet seen Myer Isaacs. In the last letter, I gave an acct of my visit to Genl Banks' army. One Jewish soldier died in the Hospital last week. Information was sent to the relatives in Pennsylvania; who came here to take the body with them. The Jews here are very poor & will I presume do little or nothing in the matter.

Excuse haste.

Yrs. respectfully,

A. Fischel
